Chapter 24

Inside his room back at the castle Gunnar sat at a table fuming over the news he had just received. The princes fat lover had escaped from his cell. Looking up at his underling Ivar he growled. “How exactly did this happen? Weren’t you down there watching him?”

Ivar felt himself begin to sweat his boss was a hairs moment away from stabbing him. “Well you see sir I was…”

“Enough!” Gunnar snapped. “I do not want to hear any of yuir excuses dog!” The irate man stood and slowly advanced on the other man a snarl in his throat. “Because you weren’t watching yuir post our prisoner has escaped and I now have the king riding my ass to find his wayward son.”

“I’m sorry sir.” Ivar lowering his head submissively. “I must have fallen asleep.”

“Fallen asleep?“ Gunnar said as if amused. “You fall asleep just when I was about to trigger my trap upon that hairy brute of a prince and grow ever closer to my goal?!” He raised is hands about to strangle the bald man. “You know how hard it was to kill the heirs? To sabotage last years crops? To get the old buzzard king of ours to agree to raid? Well do you!?”

Ivar gasped at the mention of sabotage. Because of the weak crop last year several people had died of hunger. Answering the irate man he said. “Nay sir I can not fathom how hard it must have been. Please sir I am truly sorry, give me another chance.”

“Why should I!?” Gunnar nearly screamed. “Because of you we have lost three our men to the fear of being caught and I now have to search the entire countryside! All because you just had tae fall as-”

Before he could finish his rant and wrap his hands around Ivar’s neck the door to Gunnar’s office opened and the guards who had been following Bjorn and Julie entered. His hopes slightly risen Gunnar lower his hands and stood up strait. “Did you find out where they hid the slave?” He asked them

“No sir we were deceived.” One of them said. “The prince switched clothing with a drunkard and made his escape.”

“Fuck.” Gunnar cursed. He glared at the three men before him. A deadly intent in his eyes. Opening his mouth he was about to berate them again but to the surprised of everyone in the room instead he began speaking calmly. “No, no this is alright I can still make this work.” He walked away from his three men talking quietly to himself. “All I need to do is adjust my plan… again. It shouldn’t be to hard right?” He looked over his shoulder at his underlings who were staring back at him with worried looks on their faces. “RIGHT!!”

“Yes sir!!” The three responded immediately.

Rolf grinned insanely. “Good now leave! I need to think!” Ivar and the guards didn’t need to be told twice the scurried out of the door as quickly a possible leaving their commander to his thoughts.

************

Three days later…

“Knock, knock, knock…knock, knock….Knock, knock, knock!”

Rolf, Julie, and Andrew stopped what they were doing and raced over to the farmhouse’s front door. After giving each other worried looks Rolf stepped up to the door and placed his ear against the surface. “Who is it?” He asked. There was no answer just another round of knocking. “Must be Aida.” They had all agreed to knock their code for a second time when someone asked who was at the door

Julie and Andrew visibly relaxed as Rolf opened the door revealing a tired and disheveled looking Aida standing there in the night air. “Come on in Aida ma’am.” He had like Bjorn been taught to be polite to older women regardless of their social positions.

“Thank you dear.” The slave woman said passing him. “It’s good to see you again.” She had know the farmer since he was a child. She nodded her greetings to Julie and Andrew.

“How are things back at the castle?” Rolf asked her as he helped her with her cloak.

“Not very pleasant. Lord Magnus is stomping about the place and the guards are running around like a chickens with their heads cut off.” She looked around for Bjorn. “How are my boys doing master Rolf?”

“I’m afraid not to well.” Rolf sighed. “The pair of them haven‘t moved for three days. William‘s still unconscious and Bjorn refuses to leave his side. The man even refused food stating he couldn‘t leave him alone. I have to say it‘s starting to scare me.”

“He’s just worried hun.” Aida explained. “You know what it’s like to care about someone that much.” Rolf could only nod to that statement. He was glad his wife was safe at her parents farm while all this went on.

Back in the secret room downstairs a very tired looking Bjorn kept his watch on his hurt lover. “Don’t worry lad you’ll be up and about soon.” He said gently. As he peered down at the sleeping man he felt a surge of worry rise up through his body. William was so hurt and not waking up.

‘What if he remains like this forever?’ Bjorn thought to himself. ‘I truly do not know what I would do if he never awoken. No! I can not think like that he will awaken, I know it.’

Trying to keep his mind off of unpleasant thoughts he began speaking to William hoping his voice would bring him back. “Lad remember the first time we met?” He began. “What I mean is of course you do. I mostly likely frightened you to no end. I’m so sorry I did. I’ll tell you a secret thought when you kicked my in my pride I was actually a little impressed with you. Here I was a fierce Valhallen invader who would have most likely killed you given the chance and you didn’t back down. You fought back.”

He chuckled remembering the incident fondly. “What else… What else… oh the ship! I remember you getting the better of me again a good solid kick right to the stomach. I don’t think I’ve ever been that mad. One of the men there told me later that my face was nearly purple with rage.” Thinking back to those first days he also realized something. “Lad one more thing… I don’t ever think I’ve told you how sorry I was for hitting you that time. I was angry and I’m sorry.” His father had been the reason for his anger that day but still that was no excuse.

“Though if I remember right you came right back at me cursing and yelling. He, he… I love you boy for that fire of yuirs. It’s there every time you argue with me, every time you tease me, every time we make love. … … … …Please lad, please wake up and be with me again.” Bjorn begged.

The baker still remained unresponsive causing the big man to sigh and rub his misting eyes. Bjorn lowered his head feeling tears welling up in his eyes. He rarely cried the deeply programmed reprimand that it was unmanly screaming in his head but now he didn’t give a shit about being manly he just felt like letting it all go.

He was about to finally allow the dam to burst when a quiet voice called out to him. “…Bjorn?” The distraught Valhallen’s gaze snapped back to Williams face.

{William: “As I slowly came to I could hear a distant voice talking to me. I couldn’t make out what it was saying but it was defiantly a person talking. It sounded like Bjorn’s but that was impossible I was never going to see him again. But there it was again getting louder and louder as I woke up. Finally I could make out the words. “..Please wake up and be with me again...” It was Bjorn!”}

Slowly the baker opened his eyes his gaze falling on Bjorn. Who stared back at him a few tears running down his face. “Why are you crying?” William asked weakly.

“WILLIAM!” Bjorn his happiness overwhelming him reached down and pulled William into a tight hug. Making the younger man yelp in pain from his injuries. Bjorn instantly let him go and lowered him back down to the bed. “Oh lad I’m so, so sorry!” The big man apologized. “Guess my emotions go the better of me.”

“It’s alright.” William smiled. “Where am I?”

“Yuir at Rolf‘s farmhouse.” Bjorn explained. “He brought you here after he saved ye from the dungeon.”

William began breathing heavily at the mention of the dungeon the memories of what had happened in that place flooding back to him. Gunnar’s filthy hands all over him, his cock invading his body, and the bites and scratches that the pig left on his body. He could feel himself shaking at the thoughts of the rape.

“Hush calm down love yuir safe here.” Bjorn cooed. “I promise ye that, understand.” He placed his hand over William’s chest stroking him gently.

The action calmed the baker immediately. “Thanks Bjorn.”

“Think nothing of it.” Bjorn said. “I am just so relieved tae see you awake love. Do you need some water or perhaps something to eat?” William sleepily nodded to him. “Alright… ROLF WE NEED SOME DAM FOOD DOWN HERE!”

William cringed at the loud voice but found himself laughing Bjorn was Bjorn after all.

“Bjorn yuir going to scare the boy to death!!” Came Rolf’s voice from right behind the door. “Shit.“ He cursed. The door to the room opened up revealing an embarrassed looking Rolf, Aida, Andrew and Julie. It appeared that the foursome had been listening to them through the wood.

“How long have you been there?” Bjorn asked his ears burning.

“Since you began talking to my little buddy there.” Andrew said not realizing the awkwardness in the air. The three other eavesdroppers gave him annoyed looks while a mortified Bjorn lowered his head to Williams stomach trying to hide his face.

“Awe don’t be embarrassed dear.” Aida said cheerfully as she and the others entered the room. “It was all very sweet.”

“It was Bjorn. Never knew you could be so… romantic.” Rolf said trying to hid his laughter.

“I never want tae hear you speak of this again understand.” Bjorn said angrily.

“Now, now don’t want to upset yuir lover there do you.” Aida reminded.

Bjorn raised his head nodding a no to the woman then turned back to William. The baker looked as if he was equally amused by his humiliation. “You find this funny boy?” the Valhallen asked in mock sternness.

“What can I-ahh!” As he spoke William had tried to sit up but when he moved pain shot through his entire person causing him to slip and fall down onto his back.”

“William!” The four other people in the room called out to him.

“I’m fine, just sore is all.

“It’s more then soreness little buddy.” Andrew responded.

“I agree with him William you should remain still” Bjorn added. He gently pushed the baker down onto the bed. “But now that yuir awake. I want you to tell us who did all of this to you.” There was a dangerous edge to Bjorn’s request.

The baker too ashamed at what had happened turned away. “Come on now son.” Rolf said stepping up behind Bjorn. “You need to tell us. Whoever assaulted you the way he did needs to be brought to justice. He almost killed you down there.”

Finally after several minutes William sniffled and said. “It was that man I met on the ship when you brought me here Bjorn… … … Gunnar.”

Bjorn began shaking in pure rage. “I should have know! I should have know that fucking bastard would do something like this.” He shouted standing up. He pushed his way past Rolf and walked towards the door. “I am going to go strait to that mangy dogs chambers and slitting him from crotch to sternum. Just so I can watch him die slowly!”

“Bjorn stop!” William cried out. He didn’t want Bjorn going on a foolhardy mission and get himself killed. The baker might have not know a whole lot about Gunnar but he did know the man was in charge of the guard which meant he had dozens of underlings.

“Do not try tae stop me my love he has to pay.”

“BJORN DON‘T YOU DARE MOVE ANOTHER MUSCLE!” Aida hollered.

The big Valhallen came to a dead stop and looked over at the slave woman with a frown. “Pardon me Aida but you are not one to be telling me what to do?” He told her

“The hell I am boy.” She rebuked grabbing his ear. She pulled him down roughly till they were eye to eye. “I have raised you ever since you were a pup. I am the prefect person tae tell you what yuir going to be doing and what yuir going to do is not go and get yourself killed in some unfocused quest for revenge!”

Everyone in the room looked on at the strange sight of the short slave woman tugging at the big hairy man’s ear. Aida was usually a calm person never one to really shout. But right now she was matching Bjorn’s own fierceness in her commands

Continuing Aida pulled Bjorn back to William by the ear. “What’s going to happen here is yuir going to go right back to yuir lovers side and make sure he’s alright. Then we’re all going to eat and talk about how we’re going to go about all this, got it!” Bjorn tried to pull away. “I said do you got it boy!”

Bjorn pouted like a small child being punished and said dejectedly. “Yes’um.” At last Aida let go of him. The big man rubbing his sore ear as soon as it was released. Looking at her as if she would attack him he sat back down in the chair he had been using earlier.

“Good now that we have that settled.” Aida smiled her voice returning to it’s usual calmness. “Julie, why don’t you help me with dinner? The boys will most likely be hungry.”

“Of course ma’am.“ Julie said a little afraid of the other woman herself. The two women said their goodbyes and went back upstairs.

“She really has you under he thumb doesn’t she.” Rolf remarked a smirk on his face.

“Yeah that woman’s kinda scary.” Andrew added with a shiver.

Bjorn continued to nurse his sore earlobe. “Aye, That she is.”

William however didn’t remark on the scene. He would be forever grateful to Aida for stopping his lover from doing something stupid like Gunnar said he would. Which reminded William he had to tell them about what the awful man had said. But he had to tell them in a way as to not set Bjorn off again which the news would most certainty do.

“Andrew, master Rolf could I ask you to do something for me.” William said weakly.

Both men nodded. “Of course.” “Sure thing little buddy.”

“Grab Bjorn by both arms and keep him still for me.” William asked. “I need to tell him something more.”

Both men looked at each other confused but did as asked grabbing each of Bjorn’s arms. “What’s this all about lad?” Bjorn wondered.

The baker gave him a worried look. “Bjorn what I’m about to tell you is going to make you very, very angry alright and I truly don’t blame you. But I want you to promise me that you won’t go running off seeking revenge until we‘ve all decided on a plan.”

Seeing the look on his lovers face Bjorn only grew more worried. But knew that he had to agree to remain calm for the other mans sake. “…Alright lad I promise, now tell me.”

“Ok then, what I’m about to say is about Gunnar.” William began. “He’s…

************

“Gunnar!” Came a bellowing voice through the halls of Valhallen castle. “Where on earth are you hiding yuir mangy hide.”

Gunnar gave an groan of annoyance as the irate voice of his king echoed down the castles passageways and into his ears. ‘What does that old fool want now?’ He asked himself.

The Valhallen king rushed into the chief guards head office with a less then happy scowl on his face. “There you are!” He said panting. The injury he had gotten a few days ago while healing fine but was still causing a bit of pain. “I wanted tae know if you’ve found that wayward son of mine?”

‘This again.’ Gunnar respectfully bowed to the older man. “No I’m afraid not sire. Bjorn is proving to be hard to find.” He said. “But don’t fear we’ll find him eventually and when we do he will be punished for disobeying yuir wisdom.”

“No, no punishment I just want him back.” Said Magnus. “My son is just confused. Bewitched by a devious Englishmen.” He motioned for Gunnar to get him a chair which was soon provided.

“You sound as if you speak from experience m’lord.” Gunnar said conspiratorially. He loved the chance to learn something he might be able to use against the other man later.

Magnus frowned as if remembering something painful. “Aye that I am. Years ago I found myself in a predicament similar to my sons. Though at least mine was with a woman. My father, thank the gods did the right thing when he learned of the dalliance and got me back on the right path as I will do with Bjorn. Even if I have to drag him by the beard to the altar!”

“Are you sure that would work sir? The prince seems to be very attached to the slave.” Gunnar reminded him.

“So? I was very attached to that woman.” The king huffed. “Me and her even planned tae run away together before I came to my senses and did as my father wanted.“

“You sire running off with some woman!” Gunnar smirked. “Why on earth would you go and do that?”

“Foolishness on my part. I was an older man bewitched by a stunning young beauty. I’m just glad my father caught us one day and forced me tae marry a proper woman.” The old king gave a smug smile. “Though it was a tad to late in some respects. Hard to believe that at that age I was able to easily get that lovely young woman preg…” Magnus suddenly realized he had been saying to much and quickly changed the subject. “Gunnar cease with yuir questions, I came here tae find out how the search was going. Not tae chatter about my personal life!”

“Of course sir.” Gunnar had hear the semi-spoken word the older man had spoken. This was interesting indeed. “On to the report then. We’ve searched all his usual watering holes but have come up with nothing we’re going to be moving on to wilderness next. does that sound alright?”

“No.” Magnus said. “My son wouldn’t try hiding in the woods. He’s far to spoiled for that I’m afraid.“ He laughed. He knew his son at least that much. Trying to think of a better hiding place for his son he realized where he might be. “You should try that Rolf fellow he pals about with.” He suggested.

Gunnar didn’t realize that Rolf and Bjorn were friends. He knew they often drank together but then again Bjorn drank with everybody even him on occasion. “He’ll be the next person I check sir.” Gunnar said.

“Good. Now if you’ll excuse me I’ll be leaving the healer has tae change my wrappings.” The older man stood up and walked towards the door. “When you find my son inform me immediately.” He said over his shoulder

“Alright sir see you later then.” Gunnar watched as the injured man left. “See you in yuir grave.” He added quietly.

Magnus failed to hear the last sentence his thoughts being drawn to how his son was acting. As he walked back to the main part of the castle he decided to skip his visit to the healer and went to his throne room instead. He began wondering where it all went wrong. ‘Most likely when I agreed to let him come on the raids.’ He remembered the fateful day when because of their food shortages they had been forced to plan a bout of raids.

He was loath to do so wanting nothing to do with England ever again but finally relented and began making plans. When Bjorn heard of these plans he had begged his father to allow him to come along. At first Magnus was against it having lost three sons already. He didn’t need his son getting stabbed on a battlefield and dieing. But after a month of begging on Bjorn’s part he agreed to it on the one condition that he stay in his sight.

“And there I went leaving him alone with that baker” Magnus said bitterly as he entered his throne room. “And I should have know better! The boy has the same weakness I did. Now because of that one mistake everything in our lives is at stake now.”

“No father it’s not that mistake.” Came Harald’s voice. “It’s the one yuir making now.”

Magnus turned to see his youngest son sitting on one of the many benches that were in the room. The young man appeared to be writing something in a small book. “Stay out of this boy it’s none of yuir concern.”

“Well now you see, I sort of believe it is. Bjorn’s my brother after all.” Harald said as he continued to write. “Plus I look up to that big numbskull quite a lot.”

“You wouldn’t be looking up to him so much if you knew what he has been doing.” Magnus rebuffed. Suddenly it dawned on him. Harald spent a lot of time around Aida as well as the baker. “You did know didn’t you.”

“Of course I do.” Harald said snapping his book shut. “And I approve of it. Bjorn’s never been happier. And on top of it he hasn‘t been fighting half as much as he used to.”

Magnus had to agree on that. There had been hardly no reports of fights Bjorn had been in the last year. “Be that as it may son this sort of affair cannot create anything good.”

“Father we both know that’s not true.” Harald stood up and began walking out of the room. “Just ask Bjorn about that.” Before Magnus could ask what that meant the lithe man was gone.
