Chapter 11

The next day…

Rolf let out a low whistle as he turned Bjorn’s face side to side inspecting the wounds he wore. “Whoever gave you these did a good job.” The man said

“That they did.” Bjorn said a hint of pride in his voice.

“Tell me who gave it to you.” The thinner man demanded playfully.

Bjorn gave him a sly smile but remained quiet instead looking around at the crowd. It was the next day and the Valhallen prince had to attend the wedding that William and Aida had been preparing for. It was a big party, the man and woman being wed both coming from noble families so only the high society nobles were invited. Bjorn hated these sort of celebrations the two reasons one: That they were boring and two: there were plenty of women at these things looking for their own grooms to marry.

Luckily the girls seemed to be leaving him alone this time. He had the bruises from yesterday and a swollen nose from his slave to thank for that. When he had arrived at the town square where the party was there was a moment of stillness everyone noticing his roughed up appearance. The burning question being who had attacked their prince but being fearful of upsetting Bjorn they remained silent about it that is until Rolf (Whom Bjorn had invited) showed up and rushed to him asking what had happened and kept asking him.

“Come on Bjorn out with it I promise not to make fun of you-” Rolf prodded again. “-Too much.”

“Fine I’ll tell you.” Bjorn chuckled. The large man leaned down and whispered into Rolf’s ear. “It was the one who’ve I’ve been courting.”

“Really?” Rolf laughed in surprise. “She was able to wound you? The mighty Bjorn?”

Bjorn nodded amused that his friend still had no idea it was a man who he was interested in. “That She did.” he responded. “Caused me to fall.”

“You need training boy.” His friend admonished. “You… don’t seem upset about being bested by a woman.”

““She” merely caught me by surprise.” Bjorn defended. “Besides it would only prove my manhood to bed a woman as feisty as that.”

Rolf raised an eye. “So you still intend of bedding this person?”

“Dammed right I do!” The big man said thumping his chest.

Bjorn was about to say more when Magnus arrived. His father greeted a few of his followers then walked over to his son. “Bjorn my boy what in Odin’s name happened to you.” He said once he noticed the state the man was in.

Rolf opened his mouth about to tell him but was stopped by Bjorn placing his hand over his mouth. “Nothing father merely an accident.” He told him.

“Do not lie to me boy.” Magnus said sternly. “Tell me who did this and I shall have him hung. I will not allow them to get away with it.”

Bjorn growled angrily why did his father always try to fight his battles for him “Father it was no one. I tripped in my room is all.”

Magnus gave him a hard stare. “You‘d better not be lying to me son.”

Sensing trouble Rolf spoke up changing the subject. “So… fine day for a wedding isn‘t it my king?”

“Aye that it is.” Magnus responded turning away from Bjorn. “Me hopes that one day I’ll be able to host a wedding party of my own one day. That is if my son here finally finds a lass willing to marry him.”

Rolf gave Bjorn a sly smirk which was met by an angry look from the other man. ‘Maybe that day will come sooner then you think.’ The farmer thought to himself.

Magnus however didn't notice the silent communication between the two men and kept going on with his tirade. “You ever think yuir going ta do that son?” He asked.

“Lay off father.” Bjorn said lightly. “Why go to the trouble of a wedding when I can have my fun?”

Magnus frowned at the young mans words. “Because it is the right thing to do my son.” He flourished his hand indicating the several couples at the party. “Most men yuir age are married by now and have several children. it is time you grew up and did so as well.”

“I've got plenty of time tae ruin my life once I’m older father.” Bjorn snapped. He was tired of this same old conversation. He saw no need to be so completely tied to anyone. wanting to draw attention away from himself he asked his father a question. “Why don't you ask my brother if he's ready to wed, humm? he's reaching the age and unlike me wishes to do so.”

“Yuir brother has his own affairs and as such doesn’t need me. You on the other hand are my heir.” Magnus informed him. “And as such I expect you to take the position seriously understand boy?” With one last look the Valhallen leader left his son to go greet the other guests.

“My, my that was harsh.” Rolf said once Magnus was gone.

“Aye that it was. He's always trying to get me to commit to the idea of binding myself to someone. Thinking it will keep me safe at home” Bjorn snorted. “As if I would ever wed.”

“Not even to the feisty maiden of yuirs?” The farmer asked smugly.

Bjorn picked up a stein of mead from a nearby table and took a sip “Not even to "Her". She is only a conquest. One I intend to re-conquer again and again mind ye. But not to marry.”

************

Back at the castle a tired William frantically searched through Bjorn’s room looking once again for his mothers necklace. He knew very well that he would never be able to escape from his captor but he still wished for the item back. Partly for sentimental value partly so that the next time the other man threatened to sell it he could smugly tell him off without fear.

After the incident with the tub last night Bjorn had made the baker scrub him for a full three hours. Claiming that It “helped his bruises” William didn’t’ believe him realizing that his “Master” was punishing him. During the entire bath the hairy man kept looking at him a strange gleam in his eye.

This new behavior worried the baker to no end. He didn‘t know if the man was planning some horrible revenge or even worst another amorous assault. So after they finished the bath and went to their separate bedrooms William stayed up his back against his bedroom door. Using his weight to keep it shut in order to prevent the other man from sneaking in, in the middle of the night.

To his relief Bjorn never did try to come in the man barely made a sound all night except for his usual snoring. He did hear him at sunrise however as he woke up and prepared for the day. William could hear him happily humming his mothers song as he left for the wedding that was in town that day.

William on the other hand having stayed up all night so was dead tired by morning. After Bjorn left, he left the room and wound up He staggering into the kitchen for his daily chores. When Aida saw the state he was in she told him to return to bed saying that because of the party in town she could handle the kitchen work today. She got no argument from the baker and gleefully he returned to the bedroom. But as he reached for his door he realized that he would be in Bjorn’s room alone. This was the prefect opportunity to search the for necklace.

That was three hours ago and still he couldn’t find the thing. He had turned the entire area upside down. “Come on he can’t be that smart where is it?”

“You know if you keep talking to yourself people will think yuir mad.” A voice said from behind him. William turned towards the source and found Harald standing at the doorframe. “Why were you cursing Bjorn?”

The baker stood and walked over to Harald. “I’m cursing that furry idgit because he has taken something of mine and hidden it.”

The younger man cocked his head. “What was it?”

“A memento from my mother.” William explained. “My dear “Master” says that he will sell it if I don’t obey him.”

“Hum, tough play my friend, Bjorn has always been a mean one.” Harald walked into the room. “You’ve been looking for it in here?” He asked. At William’s not he added. “The big fellow would not hide it in here my friend. He’s smart that one.”

The other man raised an eyebrow at this which made the dark haired man laugh. “Yeah, yeah I know but trust me. I’ve know him for awhile he acts clueless but he’s very bright. Now back to yuir problem. Bjorn most likely keeps it on his personage that way he would always be sure where it is.”

{William: “I had to think about this. Whenever my “master” had used the necklace to keep me quiet in the past he had always produced it very quickly. It made sense that he would have it on him…dam it how am I going to get it now?”}

William let out a frustrated sigh. “Wonderful, just wonderful. Now I can never get it back.” He said walking across the room. laying down on the bed with a flop he continued. “Why does everything have to be so hard.”

Harald laid down next to the baker. “It’s the way of life William. All we can do is make the best of it.”

William laughed lightly at the words. “Aida said something similar herself.” he said glancing over to the other man

“She is a smart one.” Harald looked distant for a second. “And right now she’d be having a fit at the state of this room.”

William sat up and looked at the mess he had created. “Your right I’ve got to get all this clean before Bjorn returns. Could you help me please?”

“I’d be happy to William better then having to do my lessons.” Harald smiled.

“Hey now school work is important.” William said feigning seriousness. But within seconds he broke out into a smile. “But between you and me I hated schoolwork too.” The pair shared a laugh before getting to the task of cleaning up the room.

************

Bjorn grumbled to himself as he stumbled down the hallway towards his room. The celebration he had been to today had sapped his energy leaving him numb and thanks to the mead a little bit drunk. After his father arrived a the wedding the older man had taken it upon himself to ask as many girls as he could find to talk to Bjorn. Usually the warrior welcomed this behavior it allowing him to pick and choose which woman he could sweet talk into bed that night. But for some reason he shied away from talking to them more then was needed.

He mostly stood at the sidelines of the party with Rolf talking. The subject of his progress with the baker came up again during their chat. Bjorn informing him of what he had done to try to win the “girls” heart and how each seemed to be doing no good. Rolf only slapped him on the back and said: “Bjorn my friend no one ever said courting would be easy. You just have to keep trying. She’ll see the light eventually and let ye into her bed.” Bjorn had grumbled at his optimism and dropped the subject.

He had been surly the rest of the night snapping rudely at the people his father sent over to speak to him. After Magnus had come over and chewed him out for being rude Bjorn had had enough and made his way home.

“Aye glad tae be home.” Bjorn when he finally arrived at his door. He was reaching for the doorknob when he heard the sound of muffled laughter from behind it.

“You really enjoy reading?” A voice said.” intrigued Bjorn pressed his ear to the door.

“Is that really so strange?” The bakers voice asked back.

Inside of the room William and Harald sat on the bed talking. “Around here it is most consider the task meaningless.” The younger man responded. “My brother did read though, he even had a place where he stored a big collection of books.”

“Bjorn?”

“No my other brother the one gone now.”

“Hum…” William said thinking. “I would like to see that sometime. I used to read a lot before I had to run my bakery.”

Back outside the room Bjorn smiled to himself having heard this tidbit of information. But his smile faded when he realized something. “The boy has another man in my room? My room with the bed!” He growled angry that the younger man had taken someone to his room. Standing up he kicked the door open with enough force for it to hit the wall and go swinging shut again bumping his sore nose. “Son of a-”

“What the hell was that!” William and Harald said staring at the door.

The door opened again albeit a bit gentler revealing a very angry looking Bjorn who limped in with his hand over his nose. “What the hell if going on in here!’ he accused.

“Bjorn yuir bleeding!” Harald said standing up.

Bjorn looked at the younger man “Harald!? Wh….what are you doing in here?”

“I’m helping my friend here if you don’t mind you idiot.” The boy said rudely.

Bjorn growled and raised his free hand to hit him. But he was stopped when William stepped between them. “I know he was being rude just now but please don’t him. I‘m sure he‘ll apologize”

“No I won’t” Harald proclaimed.

“What are you mad?” William asked him. “Our master here isn’t exactly the most understanding person.

The other man gave him a shocked look. “Master? Why on earth do you think my brother is my master?” He asked the baker.

“Wait he’s your brother!?”

“Unfortunately.” Both brothers said together.

{William: “This statement shocked me. But as I turned from one man to the other I was horrified. I could see faint traces of them in each other. The sudden realization of what I had been saying came to me then. I had been teasing and joking around with this young man and had been badmouthing his brother and father right in front of him. I was surely going to be hung for what I said.”}

Thinking quickly William got down on one knee. “I’m so sorry master I didn’t know who you were.”

“Layoff with that Willie!” Harald said pulling him back up. “I unlike my brother do not like being treated like a god.”

William refused to meet the other mans eyes acting the part of good lave. ‘My big mouth is going to get me killed.’ He thought. But to his surprise Harald placed a finger under his chin and lifted the sandy haired mans head. “Will don’t start acting like this now we’re friends so please treat me like a normal person. I quite enjoyed it.” he said.

“Really… o…ok I will Master.” at Harald’s disappointed look he corrected himself. “I mean alright Harald.”

“Good boy!” The young man cheered. He was about to say more when his arm was roughly grabbed by his older brother.

During the whole conversation the large man had become angry at how the pair seemed to be so close. He had been trying to get on the bakers good side for weeks and here was his brother in his room with the lad doing who knows what. “I think it’s time you left you little whelp.” He said pushing him out the door. “And just so you know you are to stay away from him understand.” Whatever Harald’s answer was it was unheard because Bjorn slammed his heavy door in the boys face then turned a furious eye towards William.

“How can you treat your younger brother so harshly.” William said upset.

“Never mind that boy.” Bjorn snarled. “Just what were him and you doing in here?”

William blinked in confusion wondering what he meant. Then it hit him like a sack of flour. “You think me and him are having an affair.”

“Yes.” Bjorn said.

“Really… you truly are an idiot.” William waved him away. “Me and Harald are friends nothing more.”

Bjorn glared at the baker for a few moments then over to his bed. The surface of the piece of furniture was undisturbed save for a pair of backside prints. No signs of intense activity. “Fine I believe you slave.” He finally said looking away. “But I still do not understand why you were speaking with each other. You never speak to me like you were with him.”

“Maybe that’s because he doesn’t shout commands or scream angrily at me all the time like you do.” William said. “And unlike you he calls me by my name!”

Bjorn turned back to the baker at this and gave him a hard stare. He could see a hurt look on the bakers face. Sighing he said. “Fine if that’s how you want it I won’t shout at you again. And I’ll even use yuir name, William was it?”

“Yes it’s William.” He actually didn’t believe the Viking would use his name, for some reason it made him happy to hear it from the other man finally. ‘”Thank you…Bjorn.”

“I didn’t say you could say my name boy.” Bjorn snapped. But on second thought he added. “But it’s alright. But only use it when it’s the two of us.” He placed a hand on the shorter mans shoulder which was imminently shrugged off.

“Look I’m glad we decided to act civilized and use names but I still don’t want you touching me understand.” William informed. “Now if you excuse me I need some rest, that is if I’m allowed.” Not waiting for the reply William turned around and went into his own room.

Bjorn watched sadly as the boy left. The fact that even though they had taken a big step calling each other by their names he still wasn’t allowed to touch him. Part of him was angry because in the past he wouldn’t have bother caring about the consent from the other person. Another part of him was just numb. “Why am I acting like this” He wondered. “He’s nothing but a slave I picked up during a raid. Why are his feelings so important to me and why do I want to have him so badly?”
