Chapter 12
A few weeks later.….
“Why am I blindfolded again.” William asked nervously.
“Because I want what’s going to happen to be a surprise.” Bjorn said shortly.
“This better not be a trick.” William threatened. He knew it was pointless but still he had to show the larger man he still disliked him. It had been a few weeks since that night they had decided to call each other by their names.
{William: “The last few weeks have been alright I guess. all in all things had been ok. Everyday I woke up early and helped Aida with the daily chores, Bjorn would come in around mid morning and talk to me for a bit then leave, then we wouldn’t see each other till night where we would say hello and go to our own beds. It was strained but tolerable. As the quiet weeks went on I found myself becoming closer to the big brute without realizing it. I wouldn’t have called him a friend but my attitude towards him had warmed a little. Bjorn hardly ever yelled at me anymore. Though he did seethe a bit whenever I would complain or refused to obey him. We did have the occasional fight. But instead of it escalating to the point of him hitting me or me running away he just gave me a frustrated grunt and walked off somewhere to cool down.”}
“Lad… haven’t I kept my promise to not tae try and force ye to pleasure me?” Bjorn asked. William nodded. “Then trust me now. You’ll like where I’m taking you.”
William doubted that. When the large red haired man appeared at the kitchen that morning brandishing a strip of cloth William had been very suspicious. During his visits it wasn’t uncommon for Bjorn to give him something. These things ranged from more new clothing to little trinkets. William wondered why Bjorn was being so generous to him. After all, all he was, was a slave.
When asked Aida just said that Bjorn seemed to had taken a shine to him. But it made the baker wonder if he was only being nice so he would allow the Viking to have him again. If that had been true then taking the gifts would be wrong. He intended to make sure the man never touched him again. He refused a few gifts but the next day Bjorn just returned with the refused gift and a new one to boot. Eventually he just gave up and took them to get the man out of his hair for the rest of the day.
Which was what led him to being dragged to who knows where. When presented with the strip of cloth he sighed in annoyance but said thanks and tried to take it from the other man. Bjorn had other plans however. He took the fabric and wrapped it around the bakers head covering his eyes then proceeded to lead him out into the hall. He could hear Aida giggling at his shock and say “Have a good time!” As they left.
“So how much longer is this going to take?” William said.
“Lad, have some patience.” Bjorn chuckled. He was enjoying this little game of leading the chubby baker to their destination. The reason being he had to hold the other mans shoulder as he led him to his surprise. After a bit more walking they finally arrived. “Well boy here we are!” Bjorn said happily. He carefully unwrapped the cloth covering his slaves eyes.
The first thing William saw when his vision returned was a door. An old looking door with a design carved into it. “Am I suppose to be impressed with the etching on the wood here?” He asked sarcastically.
Bjorn gave the man a wide smile “Nay lad it what’s inside.” That said he pushed open the door stepping to one side so his companion could see it.
William let out a small gasp when the contents of the room were revealed to him. It was a large sized space with a roaring fireplace lighting the finely made furniture which decorated the room. But all this was not what caught his attention, what he had seen to make him gasp were there thousands of books lining the walls.
“What is this place!?” William said in awe walking into the room. “A library?”
“Well I really don’t know what a library is but no it isn’t.” Bjorn said coming up behind him. “This was my brothers room. Never went in here much when he used it.”
The baker only half hearing what Bjorn said walked over to the nearest book shelf and examined it. Half the titles on the shelves were in languages he didn’t know some being in writing that looked like symbols. “I can’t believe Harald had all these books.” he said to Bjorn
“They aren’t Harald’s they belonged to my older brother, Snorre.” The other man explained.
William took out a book that caught his eye. “Oh was he a scholar or something?” He asked opening it.
“Nay just a show off who thought that having all these books meant he was smarter then everyone else.” Bjorn looked around the room remembering his brother. “Didn’t help him much in real life though.”
William’s curiosity was peeked when he heard what Bjorn had said but he remained quiet opting to ask why he was brought here instead. “So…did you just bring me here to show me these?”
“Yes I did” Bjorn said proudly. “I’ve had servants cleaning this room for the last few weeks so it would be nice when I brought you here.”
The sandy haired man snapped the book he was looking at shut. “Why would you do that.”
“Because m’boy you said you enjoy reading.” At William confused look Bjorn admitted. “I listened to you when you were talking to my brother that day.”
“Of course you were.” William chuckled.
{William: “That explains how he snuck up on us that day he was trying to be quiet so he could hear us.”}
“So William” The name still sounded strange for him to say. “Do you like this? You can come here each day if you want, I’ve talked to Aida and she said she could handle the noon meal herself.” Bjorn knew he was rambling a bit but continued. “If you don’t like it I could find something else. Anything lad, I want you tae feel-”
William coughed to get the large man to stop. “It’s fine Bjorn.” He hesitated a second not wanting to say what he about to say but went on anyway. “Thank you sir.”
Bjorn acted as if that simple sentence made his day. His green eyes lit up and a big shit eating grin spread across his bearded face. “Yuir welcome m’boy!’ He nearly shouted. “But there is one thing-”
{William: “Here it comes…”
“-I need to be here with you while you read.” Bjorn explained. “My father sometimes frequents this part of the castle. He might become angry if he see you alone going through his dead sons belongings.”
Alarmed William said. “Well if that’s the case maybe I shouldn’t be here.”
“Nonsense This room just sits here going to waste.“ Bjorn dismissed. “If he wonders why yuir here I can say yuir helping me with something. Now enough of this talk please read”
William gave the man a small smile which he quickly lost when he realized what he was doing. Then went over and after choosing a book sat down to read it.
Bjorn watching him backing away until he found something to sit on. He ended up in a comfy looking chair where he sat watching the boy as he began to read. He didn’t understand the other mans interest in whatever was in those musty old things but was happy to see him happy. ‘Maybe I’ll get him tae come to my bed now. He seems to like me a bit better now.’ He thought as he observed the baker.
************
Bjorn gave a sharp snort as he was shaken awake. “What?” He growled. The large man did not like being woken up.
“You know I could just as well take this food back.” William said hotly. Bjorn shifted from his comfortable position in the chair and turned towards the baker. The man was standing next to him with a annoyed glare fixated on him. “Here your probably hungry.” he held out a tray of food for him.
Bjorn sat up properly and took the tray “You got me food?” He asked. Even though the baker had gotten him food several times this seemed different. He hadn’t been ordered to fetch it or anything.
“Yeah well it’s the least I could do.” He said in a tone which literally meant that was all he wanted to do.
Bjorn chuckled at the rude words and began to eat. “I’ll thank ye anyway lad.”
William rolled his eyes and went back over to the pile of book he had amassed. “You’ve been asleep for a long time. It’s almost night outside.” he informed the other man. “I could hardly read over your snoring.”
Bjorn only grunted at the statement consumed with the meat in front of him. Once it was gone he finally acknowledged him. “I’m sorry about that…William but I tend to get bored quickly and in a place like this.”
“Figures.”
“And that means?” Bjorn asked in a slightly angry voice.
“It means” The baker began. “That it figures that someone like you wouldn’t fully enjoy books. Books are a way to escape boredom, they’re full of exciting adventures and useful information.”
“I highly doubt that.”
“No really.” William quickly searched the books he had and picked one up. “This one here for example is about a battle that takes place in medieval times.”
“A battle?” Bjorn asked. A war story was always interesting to hear. “Bring it here boy?”
William sighed at being called boy but handed the book to Bjorn anyway. The man opened the book and looked at it for a second. William though he was reading it but that was proven wrong when the large man turned the book upside-down then to it’s side. “You can’t read can you?’ William said suddenly understanding. Bjorn gave him a hard stare.
{William: “To say I was shocked would be a lie. Most in my day and age were illiterate I only knew how to do so because my mother made sure I knew how. But with him being a noble and next king I thought he must have know how. Guess I was wrong.}
Gently William retrieved the book from the other man and turned it right side up. “Here… let me read it to you, Alright?”
Bjorn nodded his consent. He really didn’t care to hear whatever was written in the book but he wanted the other man closer to him and with reading to him the baker had to sit close.
William sat down in front of the larger man and opened the book. “Ok here we go. It was a as regular a day as any other in the small town. The peasant folk went about their business as usual. But little did they know that…….”
